Warm string lights strung along a wall creating soft ambient lighting

String lighting looks effortless when it is done well and looks like a tangle when it is not. More to the point, decorative lighting is where we see the most improvised wiring — extension leads trailing through windows, joints wrapped in tape, and outdoor runs with no protection at all. We install it so it looks good and so it is genuinely safe to leave switched on.

Getting the supply right

The lights themselves are usually low power. The risk lies in how they are fed. An extension lead run out through a window, sitting in a puddle on the balcony floor, connected to a socket with no earth leakage protection, is the arrangement we are asked to fix most often.

A decorative run outdoors should be fed from a point with RCCB protection, with the driver or adaptor kept out of the weather and the cable routed where nobody will trip over it or pinch it in a door.

Indoor-rated string lights are not suitable for a balcony, even a covered one. Surat's humidity and monsoon spray will find any joint that is not sealed.

Layout that looks considered

The difference between decorative lighting that looks designed and lighting that looks draped is spacing and tension. Even swags, consistent drop depth, and cable routed along a line the eye already follows — a railing, a beam, a parapet edge — make a small set look far better than a large set thrown up quickly.

We agree the layout with you first, mark the fixing points, and then install. Nothing goes into a wall without you seeing where it will be.

  • Even swag depth along a run rather than random dips
  • Cable routed along existing lines so it reads as deliberate
  • Fixings chosen for the surface — clips on railings, hooks in beams, adhesive on tile
  • Spare cable coiled and secured at the supply end, not left hanging
  • A switch you can actually reach, or a timer

Seasonal and permanent installs

Some customers want lighting up for Diwali or a wedding and taken down after. Others want a permanent balcony or terrace installation they can switch on any evening. The materials differ: a seasonal run can use temporary fixings, a permanent one needs proper outdoor cable and fixed points.

For seasonal work we can also come back and take it down and store it, which saves the annual battle with a knotted box of lights.

Questions

Fairy Lights questions we are asked most

Do you install for Diwali and weddings?

Yes, and we book up quickly around the festival season. Give us as much notice as you can — a week ahead is comfortable, the day before often is not.

Can fairy lights stay up in the monsoon?

Only if the set and every connection are outdoor rated and the supply has earth leakage protection. Indoor sets should come down before the rains.

Will you use my own lights?

Yes. We check the set is in good condition first and will tell you if a run is unsafe rather than installing it and hoping.

Can you fit a timer?

Yes. A simple timer or a smart plug on a protected point means the lights come on at dusk without you thinking about it.
