Diagnosing a bell that has stopped

There are only four things in a wired doorbell circuit: the push, the wiring, the chime unit and the supply or transformer. Finding which one has failed takes a few minutes with a meter, and it is worth doing because three of the four are cheap to replace.

By far the most common failure is the push itself — it lives outside, gets pressed thousands of times, and its contacts corrode. The second most common is the transformer, particularly in older installations where it has been quietly cooking in a closed box for years.

Video door phones

Video door phones are worth the extra work, particularly for ground-floor flats and for anyone who would rather see who is at the gate before opening. The install is more involved than a bell: there is a cable run between the outdoor unit and the indoor monitor, a supply for the monitor, and often a lock release to wire in as well.

We plan the cable route first. Concealing it in existing conduit or running it through a false ceiling is usually possible and looks far better than a cable clipped along the wall.

Small job, same standards

We treat a doorbell the way we treat a distribution board: proper terminations in an enclosure, cable secured, nothing left to hang on its own connections.
